Doing Our part To Reduce Island Waste
Plastic is one of those materials that can be very challenging to recycle. Many times, it ends up in landfills, or worse, waterways like oceans and lakes. As an island based farm on the Northern Lake Michigan waters, it is vital that we do our part to reduce waste creation and disposal volume. To combat plastic pollution, we have created a unique local program that allows residents and businesses to recycle select items that can safely be repurposed on our farm. Each month recyclers enter to win free organic produce through our raffle program! Learn more about the steps to participate below.
Step #1: Save Your Clams!
Interested in participating? Then it’s time to start saving your clams! Plastic clamshells are clear containers with hinged or matching lids that you find fresh berries, tomatoes, salads and our locally-grown Microgreens packaged in. Attached lid is best but not required. As long as they’re a perfect pair of a container and lid that securely close with no dyes or coloring, we’ll take them to recycle and repurpose. Just make sure that your clams are empty and rinsed but labels are perfectly okay to stay on!

Step #2: Local Drop-Off
When you are ready to recycle your plastic clamshells, stop in to the Beaver Island Transfer Station and look inside for our Blue rain barrel with Zero-Waste Poster sign. Once you drop-off, scan our custom QR code to enter the raffle [See Below @ Step #3]. Entries can be submitted once per week when dropping off your clamshells. Our Farm Raffle Drawings are held on the last day of each month with winners notified via email and celebrated on social media. Prizes include our FRESH ORGANIC PRODUCE AND MICROGREENS!

Step #3: Enter Our Monthly Raffle
Our Zero-Waste Raffle Program is FREE for island residents! After recycling your clamshells at our drop-off location, scan our QR code and simply fill out the form below to enter the raffle. It’s that easy!

Nope! As a new program and new farm, we are looking to accumulate as much packaging material as possible. Each item recycled is one less piece of plastic pollution on our earth and we want to do our part to make a difference.

Not at all! Scanning the QR Code and registering on our website is only required if you'd like to be entered in the drawings for our monthly farm raffles. We use your email address to notify of periodic farm updates and of course...if you WIN!
All accepted containers are put through a 7 point cleaning, delabeling and sanitization process to ensure that they can be safely reused for fresh produce that we grow on the farm. Containers are also repurposed for various storage uses with supplies. This program helps us to reduce waste volume on the island and allows us to run a more environmentally sustainable operation.
